Life before Death (PG)
One in ten people die in severe pain. It doesn’t have to be that way. The answer is morphine. The problem is the government, medical profession and public perception.
Initially the film focussed on the global plight of cancer sufferers being blocked from a cheap form of pain relief – morphine. Mike Hill (director) travelled to many countries poor and rich returning with stories from sufferers as they dealt with the terminal nature of their disease as well as those trying to make a difference in the medical profession.
As time progressed the feature documentary found it’s real form covering not only the need for universal pain relief but also death with dignity – that of palliative care. Both subjects need to be put squarely in the mainstream conversation. Sadly neither have been heard and discussed consistently outside those at the front line administering care.
